Avatar (2009)

Pernyataan paling pas untuk 20th Century Fox untuk film fiksi ilmiah “Avatar,” di antara film paling mahal yang pernah dibuat. Meskipun banyak skeptis, tapi pihak studio berpikir dapat menghasilkan keuntungan, sebagian karena otak dari pencipta film tersebut adalah James Cameron kekuatan pendorong di belakang film besar TITANIC.

Budget 500 juta dollar merupakan rekor untuk film termahal saat ini, rekor ini mengalahkan film Pirate Caribean 3 yang menghabiskan total budjet 300 jt dollar.

Tabloid terlaris di Inggris, The Sun, menyebut Avatar sebagai film paling memesona dekade ini. “Adegan perang pada akhir babak yang panjangnya 20 menit benar-benar menakjubkan.”

Avatar menceritakan perang untuk mempertahankan hidup antara kaum Na’vi yang tinggal di hutan, melawan operasi pertambangan kolonial di planet mereka. Seorang mantan marinir pincang dipilih untuk membina kontak dengan orang-orang misterius yang dikendalikan Avatar dari jarak jauh.

Meskipun diperkirakan budjet setengah miliar dolar ( 500 juta dollar ) yang dihabiskan pada produksi dan pemasaran, “Avatar” mungkin membawa risiko keuangan sedikit mengejutkan untuk perusahaan induk Fox.. dimana mereka harus memastikan bahwa modal yang dikeluarkan sebanding dengan pendapatan yang diterima.. Sebagai informasi pada pertengahan bulan ini saja, film avatar telah mengumpulkan 250 juta dollar untuk pemutaran di Amerika, belum ditotal dari pemutaran dari bioskop di seluruh dunia,

Jika resensi perdana dan buzz twitter dianggap indikasinya, studio film 20th Century Fox diyakini akan meraup keuntungan sangat banyak. James Cameron telah membuktikan dirinya bahwa dia memang rajanya dunia [film],” sanjung surat kabar The Hollywood Reporter. Sementara jejaring sosial twitter mengutipkan komentar-komentar para jurnalis. “James Cameron benar-benar jenius! Saya tak bisa ngomong apa-apa lagi, keren habis, saya suka banget,” tulis Alex Billington dalam laman film FirstShowing.net.

Majalah Empire memberi lima bintang penuh kepada film ini seraya menyebutnya sebagai sebuah “kerja dengan ganjaran luar biasa besar,” di mana teknologi baru telah memudahkan para sutradara berkreasi.

Mark Brown dari The Guardian, London, menulis di edisi Kamis koran itu bahwa Avatar benar-benar lebih hebat dari perkiraan. Film ini mengagumkan dan kisahnya mengena sekali, meski murahan di banyak bagian.

“Film mengerikan yang oleh banyak orang sempat dihindari itu, tidak terbukti [mengerikan]. Bagus,” tulis Brown.
